On a more historical note, colorless and pale
blue Nigerian topaz was considered some of the best material to
irradiate to the bright blue colors seen in jewelry stores
today. The material is known for its color intensity and
quickness to "cool down" from the radioactivity to be
marketable.
Africa is a special place for gemstones. It is
the home of some of the oldest-known gem mines as well as the
source for several new and now-well-known gem varieties. It
seems as if every year new finds of important gemstones are made
from every part of the continent, and, just as rapidly, these
localities often stop producing. Africa is the second-largest
continent, with more than 30 million square kilometers, or 20
percent of the earth's land mass. Volumes have been written on
some of the localities that produce gems
Our Company still focus on other transparent
species of good quality. Although there are hundreds of
localities for these transparent gems, there are literally
thousands that produce cabochon materials in Nigeria,
For years Nigeria was known for its intense blue
aquamarine, a gem variety of beryl, considered by many to be the
finest commercial quality available, even with the minor
inclusions inherent in the material. As supplies ran short the
Nigerian miners found a new source of tourmaline (elbaite) in
brownish-red to red colors, some of which is considered to be
rubellite. It is estimated that 100 tons of this tourmaline
rough of all qualities came out during the last few years,
mostly from alluvial sources close to its formation, as
evidenced by the mostly sharp crystals and lack of erosion on
many of the pieces. This material is now scarcely found in the
rough. Instead, a blue-green to blue tourmaline, some of which
is considered to be indicolite, is now being mined in a
different locality.
Also in the last few years fine Spassatite Garnet have been
mined, with a color ranging from brownish-orange to intense
orange, in sizes to 20 carats and flawless, although this
material is becoming scarce.
More recently, in the 1990s, a discovery of elongated crystals
of emerald (or green beryl, depending upon one's interpretation
of the term emerald) was made at Jos, Nigeria. Their color is
due mostly to vanadium and, to a minor extent, chromium, and
they have a definite blue tinge. recently 162grams of Aquamarine
was discover in Gurum a village near Jos Plateau State Nigeria
2nd March 2006 the color is deep blue Clean and transparent.
